Essex County Councillor Mark Webster has taken to Facebook to trumpet soaring road repair figures — but his victory lap has met a frosty reception in the town he represents.

The Reform UK councillor for the Brightlingsea Division posted to the Spotted: Brightlingsea group this week with a bold message: "We said we would increase highways delivery. Now judge us on the numbers."

And the numbers are certainly eye-catching. July saw a 60% increase in repairs, August was up 30%, and September jumped 61%, according to Webster's post. That adds up to an average 50% increase over the last three months, with 8,969 repairs completed across Essex since 1 May. "No hiding behind promises," Webster declared. "Judge us on actually fixing things."

But Brightlingsea residents were quick to judge — and the verdict was mixed at best.

'''"Could we have the Brightlingsea numbers?"'''

The sharpest pushback came from resident Mat Court, whose comment racked up 20 reactions. Court revealed he had filed Freedom of Information requests with Essex County Council about road defects in the town.

"My June FOI showed 1,300 outstanding road and pavement defects in Brightlingsea," Court wrote. "When I repeated the same request in August, there were still 1,283."

He challenged Webster directly: "So how many outstanding defects are there in Brightlingsea now, and how many actual repairs have been completed here since 1st May? If possible, it would be useful to see roads and pavements separately." (''fact-checked: unverified — the FOI links shared on Facebook were truncated and the ECC FOI portal was inaccessible at time of writing. Court's claims are attributed to him pending verification.'')

Court provided links to ECC's published FOI responses from June and August to back up his figures, inviting anyone to check the data themselves.

'''Whose credit is it anyway?'''

A recurring theme in the comments was whether Reform UK could legitimately claim credit for the repair surge. Several residents pointed out that the funding and scheduling predated Reform's takeover of Essex County Council.

Ron Knights set the tone: "Only possible due to extra funding released by our current government, I think this is cynical for reform to claim credit." His comment attracted 18 reactions.

Jevon Ellis was more pointed: "Credit is due to the Labour government who gave the extra funding and the previous Essex CC who scheduled these works before REFORM were elected, and are now making a cynical attempt to claim the glory for." His comment earned 12 reactions.

Matt Donovan described Webster's boast as "bit of an own goal," adding: "If there are still repairs and maintenance being carried out next year you can take credit. I'll reserve judgement."

Not everyone was critical. Margaret Lindley urged Ron Knights to give credit where it was due, while Roger Long struck a balanced note, describing more pothole repairs as "a good thing" but calling for transparency on "comparable repair numbers, costs and quality of repairs."

'''The wider picture'''

Reform UK took control of Essex County Council in May 2025, following local elections that saw the party become the largest group. Highway maintenance has been a flagship issue — and a long-standing source of frustration for Essex residents.

The Department for Transport allocated an additional £200 million to local authorities across England for pothole repairs in 2024–25, with Essex receiving a significant share. Separately, Essex County Council has reported investing an extra £7.5 million in highways, with additional crews deployed, though the split between nationally-funded and council-funded work remains a point of debate.

Chester Copperpot's experience echoed a familiar complaint: "Lots of road got marked round my area but nothing has happened and those marks have now faded and gone so will need re-doing."

Michael Andre was more specific, pointing to "the footpath of Ophir Road" where promised work "been conveniently forgotten."

At the time of writing, Cllr Webster had not responded to Mat Court's question about Brightlingsea-specific repair numbers.
