Brightlingsea drivers face seven weeks of road closures in the run-up to Christmas as Cadent Gas rips out ageing metal gas mains and replaces them with plastic.

The work starts on Wednesday 4 November 2026 and is due to last about seven weeks, county councillor Aimée Keteca told the Spotted: Brightlingsea Facebook group on Friday 17 October.

Cllr Keteca said she had received notification from Cadent Gas and shared a list of planned closures across the town (''fact-checked: unverified — the specific dates and streets are attributed to Cllr Keteca, relaying a Cadent notification; they could not be independently confirmed on one.network, see SOURCES''):

* Waterside — closed 4–24 November
* New Street — closed 18–24 November
* Colne Road — closed 2–22 December
* Lower Park Road — multi-way temporary traffic lights 9–22 December

'''Why now'''

The project will replace ageing metal pipes with longer-lasting plastic, part of a decades-long programme to renew Britain's ageing gas network. Cadent is the gas distribution network for the East of England, the region that takes in Brightlingsea (''fact-checked: confirmed — [https://cadentgas.com/upgrading-your-gas-pipes Cadent]'').

Cadent has been carrying out the same metal-to-plastic upgrades across Essex, most recently in Frinton-on-Sea (''fact-checked: confirmed — [https://cadentgas.com/news Cadent]'').

'''What residents are worried about'''

The announcement drew a long thread of comments from residents concerned about how a town with limited road access will cope.

Bus services topped the list. Marney Linsell said travellers need to know which stops fall out of use so they are not late for work. Jo Oliver-Gleed said the First Bus app is unreliable during diversions and called for signs at every affected stop. Cllr Keteca said she had already written to First Bus asking for an urgent response.

Claire Ruse said Red Barn Road is already access-only for water works the week beforehand and questioned why the Seaview Road closure was not scheduled for half term.

Lorry access to the harbour came up too. Colin Gould asked whether Colne Road and Waterside would shut completely and how lorries would reach the wharf. Caron Gould warned a full closure "doesn't help other businesses on the wharf". Chester Copperpot said the town "isn't exactly cut out for any form of transport".

And with Christmas approaching, residents worried about Santa's schedule. Tony Brooke flagged "the bin collections and Santa sleigh". Angie Davey added: "Somebody must inform Father Christmas!"

'''Christmas events in the firing line'''

Susan M Westwood said the Colne Yacht Club fireworks display falls on Sunday 8 November — the same week Waterside is due to close — and asked whether Cadent could delay its start until the 9th.

'''How to find out more'''

Cadent is holding a drop-in session for residents and businesses on Tuesday 3 November, from 1pm to 3pm, at Oyster Tank Road car park (''fact-checked: unverified — attributed to Cllr Keteca'').

Cadent's East of England customer line is 0800 151 2404. For gas emergencies, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Live and upcoming roadworks are listed on one.network.
